Policy: Please know that in most cases, math homework is a place to PRACTICE, not necessarily MASTER. Your child will be given opportunities in class to review the homework, ask questions, and revise once more comfortable with the concepts. I will sometimes identify a homework as a "TRY" homework which is to give it your best shot without any worries. ALL homework should be COMPLETED in its entirety so that your child's thinking is shown. Grades are not assigned to all homework assignments. In some cases, homework will also be based on previously covered concepts. This is a time for your child to practice the skills for reinforcement.
Are calculators ok? In some cases, yes. When the work being covered is more of a problem solving nature and not practicing facts and computational fluency, then calculators are ok. They help to expedite the problem solving so as not to bog down your child with the computations needed to move to the next step.
Parents frequently ask "Is it ok to help with the homework?" Answer - Absolutely! Just please make sure that your child can explain how he/she arrived at the answer. Getting the right answer doesn't mean he/she understands what is being done. All homework, including work shown, however, should be the child's.
The most critical thinkers in math aren't always the ones with the right answers!
